U.S. insurance is invalid in Mexico, but luckily, Mexico insurance is easy to obtain in the U.S. and is generally quite affordable. It is against Mexican law to drive into Mexico without auto insurance. The minimum you need is civil liability insurance, but other plans are available, priced according to vehicle and coverage.
Contact your local AAA Travel branch for more information on obtaining travel insurance.
