Most and Least Expensive Vehicles to Insure

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, the purchase price may be your biggest influence. But that is only one of many money-related factors to consider. You should also think about the annual cost to insure that vehicle, a cost that is not directly proportional to the purchase price.

When determining the insurance cost for a particular car, the price of the car is just the starting point. Insurance companies consider many other factors, such as:

  • What is the average repair cost if the car is involved in a crash?
  • If the vehicle crashes, how much damage will it likely cause other vehicles?
  • Based on historical data, is the vehicle more likely than other vehicles to be involved in a crash?

To answer these questions, insurers look at characteristics such as engine capacity, number of cylinders, overall vehicle size, vehicle type, horsepower, model year, and advanced safety features. Once the vehicle’s characteristics are weighed, the final insurance premium is determined by the driver component. This involves factors such as driving record, annual mileage, and years of driving experience.

Each year, the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center reports the least and most expensive vehicles to insure based on internal actuarial data. Very high end, low volume, luxury exotic vehicles were not included. The results were divided based on starting MSRP and the premiums reported are the average for each model.

Overall, the most expensive vehicle to insure is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, two-door coupe. With a purchase price of almost $240,000, the premium is $4,500 per year. On the other end of the spectrum is the 2015 smart fortwo with a purchase price under $14,000 and an annual premium around $1,400. The following tables provide the top 10 least and most expensive premiums for each range of MSRP.
